EVER HEARD OF KOOTHANDAVAR TEMPLE FEST..
KOOVAGAM village in TamilNadu admits hundreds of transgender people from various parts of country on the auspicious occasion of temple fest. Transgender people regards Koothandavar, the principle deity of the temple, as their husband and worship him. Aravan was given a common name_Koothandavar. Aravan was the son of pandava prince Arjuna. They hold the festival at the temple every year to commemorate the sacrifice of Aravan. This festival begins on April 29 and lasts for 16 days symbolizing the war between Pandavas and Kauravas.
This occasion is hosted by different non governmental organisation with support of the Tamil nadu government.
On the penultimate day, transgender people follow all the elements and old rituals getting their Thalis (Mangalsutra) tied by the temple priests declaring Aravan as their husband. The celebration continues till the dawn.
They mourn the death of Aravan by breaking thalis and bangles. It's the mythology that says pandava decided to sacrifice Aravan to ensure their victory against kauravas in the Kurukshetra war. He accepted the decision only if his last desire will be accepted. His last desire was to marry, which was accepted by pandavas. No women wanted to marry Aravan because he would be sacrificed the next day. To find a solution for this, Lord Krishna transformed himself into a woman and married Aravan.
The next day, pandavas sacrificed Aravan.
